Provincial Flood Watch for Ontario Issued by the Surface Water Monitoring Centre of the Ministry of Natural Resources on March 15, 2012 MNR Districts: Parry Sound, Bancroft, Peterborough, Kemptville, Pembroke, Algonquin With the unseasonably high temperatures starting last week, there has been significant melting of the snow pack occurring for much of the Province. Although many parts of the south no longer have snow, there are remaining amounts in the Kemptville/Pembroke/Bancroft/Parry Sound/Peterborough/Algonquin regions. Much of this snow is already very saturated from rainfall in recent days and will likely not hold more precipitation. Snow data indicates that most locations south of Bancroft have trace/nil amounts, however in the Algonquin Region 10-20cm of snow still exists. In the Parry Sound area, snow depths are between 17-39 cm. Two snow stations in the Parry Sound area show 110mm of water equivalency in 31cm of snow, and 103mm of water equivalency in 39cm of snow. Current streamflow conditions in south-eastern Ontario, specifically Kemptville District, show many locations at 50-75% of bank full. There are also locations within Peterborough/Bancroft /Parry Sound that are at 50-75% of bank full. Continued warm temperatures and possible thunderstorm activity could lead to increasing water levels, localised flooding and fast moving water. A close watch on local conditions, and updated forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada is recommended. |
